Please join us for...
Post Thanksgiving

Penny
Party
Premier

Penny is a conduit who speaks to this American moment by expressing our collective grief and despair, yet exemplifies the unquenchable hope that lies deeper in the human heart.

Healing is an overt theme of the work, as exemplified by Penny’s awkward yet earnest commitment to meditation, nature worship, and conversations with a radically different kind of deity.

Even in relative isolation, Penny taps into cultural themes of loneliness, class disparity, contradictory values, and unprecedented U.S. instability, illuminating everyday magical wonders while lamenting the catch-22 bind of being human: “No one said it was going to be easy!”

This hilarious and heartfelt multimedia performance/film juxtaposes physical pratfalls with seriousness, absurdities with sincerity, and pathos with humor.

This piece utilizes experimental sound design, lowbrow video editing techniques, and DIY aesthetics for comedic effect.

Written, produced, filmed, and performed by artist Kelly Nesbitt with the use of iphone, ipad, and imovie.

In collaboration with Furstwurld and Khamush/Robbi ~ Penny will now be lifted to new high tech levels!

Once again we are honored to have music donated to the show by the most excellent composer Lee Scott.

This will broadcasted LIVE and direct from Joshua Tree at Bobby Furst’s with Penny there!

https://www.furstwurld.org/

This hilarious and heartfelt multimedia performance juxtaposes physical pratfalls with seriousness, absurdities with sincerity, and pathos with humor.

Penny is a one-person performance that is written, produced, filmed, and performed by artist Kelly Nesbitt. Kelly first debuted at Furstwurld back in 2017 as part of the Dr Tallulah Vaginal Consciousness Tour (VAGCON™).

This performance/film features Penny on the stage, on the screen, socially distanced, and broadcasted live from Furstworld. Penny debuts her world premiere short film composed of a mash-up of homemade, absurd, non-linear, low-budget videos highlighting the inner workings of their clown mind. Grab your popcorn!

The film utilizes experimental sound design, lowbrow video editing techniques, and DIY aesthetics for comedic effect. The film was made on an iPhone, iPad, and iMovie. Pop references are made to honor the late Gil Scott Heron, Fred Rogers, The Muppets, Alan Watts, and Roberta Flack.

We witness Penny’s subversive homage to Conan The Barbarian through reenacted battle scenes that mock the relentless phallic imagery dispersed throughout the original 1982 film. Penny’s umbrella can be a dick too! We then switch to Penny seeking advice from META PENNY™, an elder genderless alter-ego, time-traveling queerdo.

Even in relative isolation, Penny taps into cultural themes of loneliness, class disparity, contradictory values, and unprecedented U.S. instability, illuminating everyday magical wonders while lamenting the catch-22 bind of being human: “No one said it was going to be easy!” ~ Penny

In collaboration with FURSTWURLD ~ PENNY will be lifted to new levels! We will be broadcasting LIVE from FURSTWURLD, in JOSHUA TREE on TUESDAY NOV 17th. Save the date!

RESTORATIVE PLAY WORKSHOP

RESTORATIVE PLAY WORKSHOP

RESTORATIVE PLAY WORKSHOP at NORTH PORTLAND YOGA

SIGN UP HERE

This all levels workshop offers participants an opportunity to explore their inner clown within a safe container. There will be group work, individual work, and tiny mask work. Guidance, direction, and feedback will be provided to all participants. We will bring greater awareness to the space, generate heat with our bodies, and tap into altered states. There will be suspended moments of restoration, integration, and contemplative thought.

As a collective, we will be elevating our stupidity, studying each other's movements, and playing the roles of observer and observed. Careful attention will be made as we begin to define character. You'll walk away with a greater somatic understanding of yourself and foster ways in which you can incorporate more play into your life outside of the studio. Our artistic climates are changing seemingly rapid, and there has never been more relevance to the vulnerability and self-effacement of the fool.

No performance or clown experience is required. Curiosity and risk are key. Inclusively is a must. Come in loose comfy clothing, braless if you will, wear solid colors, and avoid wearing logos. Bring a snack, journal, and water.

Saturday #1 will focus on foundation work.

Saturday #2 will fine tune your sense of play and hone in on character work.

We will meet for two Saturdays in March (14th and 21st) from 2-5pm. Please register online. The cost for the series is $40 (for 6 hours total). It is recommended that folx attend both Saturday workshops. If you can only do one, have specific needs, or sliding scale requests, please reach out in advance. Maximum capacity is 12 participants.

*Accessibility; the space has one step down into the studio. Unfortunately there is not a ramp.

From the Instructor Kelly Nesbitt

Kelly’s experience spans 20 years in performance, clowning, and healthcare. Kelly is interested in the intersection between play and healing, practice and technique. Kelly has been studying under the master multidisciplinary fool Giovanni Fusetti and incorporates play into their teachings as an Occupational Therapist. Kelly’s credits their greatest teacher of all play to their little doggie companion, Rosie.

Co-produced by Kelly Nesbitt and Hank Logan

Host: Katie Piatt

Five Performances by: Hank Logan/Pat McCulley, Claire Rigsby/Keegan Kyle, Crow Lauren Jean, Kelly Nesbitt, [E]mpress

Katie Piatt is a nonbinary educator, storyteller, and performance artist who teaches children and adults alike how to smash patriarchy through the wonders of arts and crafts. They have performed at the Banff Centre, Portland’s Artist Repertory Theatre, PNCA, PSU, the street, the Siren Theater, and most recently at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in May 2019."

Hank Logan Peterson is a multidisciplinary theatre/movement artist who's latest volume of work has been devoted to Butoh and it's various sister forms from Japan, and abroad. Working with Patrick McCulley for their second iteration is a true delight; to facilitate a transpersonal and hypnotic journey of sonic and Mono; material.

Patrick McCulley is a Portland, Oregon saxophonist, composer, and educator. His music blends elements from the playing styles of saxophonists Colin Stetson, John Coltrane, and Roscoe Mitchell to transform the saxophone from an everyday instrument into an unrelenting force of nature.

Claire Rigsby and Keegan Kyle are physical theatre artists who are drawn to repetitive motion and simplicity. Inspired by Pina Bausch’s Cafe Müller, The Viewpoints, and Mary Oliver, Palindrome Machines seeks to explore the tension and resolve contradictions that exist within ourselves.

Crow Lauren Jean (they/them), “death do us part" is a performance that tells the origin story of the inescapable monster that is gender. The telling of this tale comes through a human body in movement as they devolve through ancestral memories to their most primal roots in the prehistoric seas.

Kelly Nesbitt is a performance artist who merges performance art, physical comedy, and video. Nesbitt will be introducing a new character, Penny. This will be a tale about a changing climate and the relationship between a clown and mother earth (video/performance).

[E]mpress - Rayawnie Paris, is a Portland native, is a musician who bridges genres forming original sounds like hip-hop, EDM, and classic rock - it’s like a combination of Gandalf and StevenTyler, but way better. You’ll wanna get out of your seat for this one! (photo credit henry m ward)

Mushimaru Fujieda: Natural Physical Poetry Workshop - PDX

Attending:

Water in the Desert Theater brings Mushimaru Fujieda. #witd

Mushimaru calls the body of his dance work “Natural Physical Poetry”. In this workshop, students will explore movement in relationship to their breathing rhythm, which Mushimaru believes is highly individual and the most basic approach for accessing and generating one’s own unique dance. Through our personal expression, we will search to rediscover the playfulness of the inner child, free from more normalized codes of gesture. Mushimaru’s method is an effective tool for developing sensitivity as a dancer in order to both integrate and release the mind-body. This workshop is open to all ages and abilities as well as all levels of experience of movement and dance. Come join us to explore our own natural poetry through motion.

Exercises include:

Controlling the mind-body through the breath
Exercises to prepare and focus the mind-body
Breath-Walking
Vocalization: using the voice as an extension of the breath
Facial Expression
Exercises to link the breath with movement
Somatic Meditation

HARVEST RITUALS WITH MIZU DESIERTO - PDX

Attending:

Utilizing creative impulse, imagination, poetic contemplation & mindful movement, we will come together to train and co-create a weekend of personal and collective harvest rituals. Utilizing the metaphor of the season and the changing landscape (both internally and externally) we offer and share together the culmination of the seeds we have consciously or unconsciously planted over the passing year. What is currently emerging in its fullness, ready for you to more deeply embody? At the same time, what old skin/habits/patterns are currently dying? Using physical/imaginative warm-ups to open the energetic centers of our body and joints, along with exercises with roots in butoh, contemplative dance and physical theatre--this weekend is an opportunity to harvest our creative selves in community and to celebrate/ritualize the changing season.

This workshop will take place outside, weather permitting (light rain, yes! torrential downpour, move to Waterline Studio). Wear layered clothing to keep you both warm and cool as needed, water and light snacks to keep you nourished.

Registration is sliding scale ($100-150 for 2 days/10 hours); For those who would like to trade with work instead of pay, we will have a farm work day on Friday, October 13th from 10am-5pm. If you come for the whole day, this will cover the cost of the workshop. Pre-registration is required.

Mizu Desierto is a dance-theatre artist, artistic director and farmer whose life=art explores themes of feminism, queerness, playful social deviance and regenerative land/culture. She is the co-founder of Portland’s Water in the Desert, a hub of numerous projects, including: The Headwaters Theatre, Prior Day Farm & the annual festival that is Butoh College. Mizu has trained in butoh, physical theatre and improvisation for over 20 years. She has performed with Diego Piñon (Mexico), Harupin-Ha (Japan/Berkeley), Yoshito and Kazuo Ohno (Japan), The Carpetbag Brigade, and Degenerate Art Ensemble, as well as creating and touring her own work. She recently concluded her 2nd fellowship residency at PLAYA, with the multi-generational women's ensemble, Ævium. She has performed and taught workshops throughout the US, including Naropa University, Portland State University, Prescott College & Reed College.

Her multimedia performances employ costumes, props, and audience participation with a sharp sense of rhythm, somatic awareness, and swift sensitivity to audience interaction.

Open Signal + Open School North + Kello Goeller Residency Opening (performer)

Open Signal + Open School North + Kello Goeller Residency Opening (performer)

I will be a featured story teller inside this pyramid!

At this exhibition, celebrate Open Signal's work with Open School North (OSN), led by artist-in-residence Kello Goeller. Enjoy tacos, refreshments, interactive activities and storytelling performances by artists from Kello's community and OSN students, inspired by the concept of infinity.

You'll also get to experience "i/me/you/we are infinitely unique together," the culminating project of Goeller's residency. During Goeller's time at the school, Open School North middle school students learned the basics of fractals, the concept of infinity and how these ideas connect the beauty of the natural world with math.

After learning that their bodies are fractalline in structure, that there is a vast landscape of self-similarity inside, the students created kaleidoscopic animations inspired by the prompt: What makes you infinite? These will be displayed via a ten-foot-tall, twenty-foot-wide sound-reactive pyramid, with video projections visible from both the outside and inside of the structure.

"These kids need community, inclusivity, safety to be themselves, and the world we live in doesn’t encourage their heart, magic and soul," said Goeller. "I've been cultivating a ‘permissionary’ practice in my work and community, leading a performance art collective to share work in progress and heal creative blocks. We need more blanket forts in this world, more fuzzy things, more pillows, to feel and cry and shine.”

dreambody workshop with giovanni fusetti - PDX

  • Process Work Institute 2049 NW Hoyt St. Portland, OR 97209 (map)

Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 2.40.16 PM.png

This seminar is open to every person wishing to explore the connection between movement based theatre and Process Work, both on an intellectual level and in an experiential way. The experiential part of the seminar will offer tools of self-awareness through the power of expression, embodiment and humor. Previous experiences and knowledge in Process Work will be helpful but they are not required.
The seminar is open to any person interested in exploringher-himself with humor and depth; to anyone involved in the arts, education, social work, health care (educators, social workers, therapists...). Theatre artists will discover a way to work with very personal raw emotional states and turn them into great poetic material and physical comedy.
The emotional work will be intense and ecstatic: the body will reveal what it needs to experience and express, in a dynamic of amplification, play, letting go and insights.
Shadows, angels, demons, archetypes, physical symptoms, dreambody processes will appear and will be welcomed in the alchemical power of the group.

A strong and playful desire of diving in one’s own folly is required !

As the final step of a research project, the seminar is in part experimental, and participantswill be part of a pedagogic creation, in which new exercises and approaches will be explored.

The seminar will provide a variety of insights, knowledge, exercises and tools for practitioners (therapists, teachers, facilitators…). All material will be shared for the common good of individual and collective awareness and as a celebration of pedagogic research and creation.
As a creator of these seminars, I ask that, if you will use, develop or integrate the material of the seminar into your practice, as I wish, you will quote its source.

See you in the playing field.

Practicing Death & Dying workshop with Keith Hennessy - PDX

A workshop by Keith Hennessy

Dying and caring for the dead as creative, experimental, social practice. Healing, fake healing, playing dead, inventing ceremony. Dying alone and dying in community. Saying goodbye as transformative sculpture, performance, ritual, and play. The trip is divided into 3 practices: fake healing, solo death mediation, collaborative care of the dead. The final practice requires several volunteers (dying swans?) to play dead for 2 hours in service to community death practice.

This event is part of 3 Trips: a series of guided experiences with Keith Hennessy (Feb 11-18)

Keith Hennessy is a performer, choreographer, teacher, writer and activist. Born in Sudbury Canada, he lives in San Francisco and tours internationally. His interdisciplinary research engages improvisation, ritual and public action as tools for investigating political realities. Ideas and practices inspired by anarchism, critical whiteness, punk, and queer-feminism motivate and mobilize Hennessy’s creative and activist projects. Hennessy directs Circo Zero, and was a member of the collaborative performance companies: Contraband with Sara Shelton Mann, CORE, and Cahin-caha, cirque bâtard. Awards, commissions, residencies? Yes, several. Rejections, unemployment, failures? Yes, plenty.

Dr Tallulah presents: New Frontiers in Vaginal Consciousness (SomaSpace, PDX)

3 shows! Jan 27, 28, 29th @8pm!

TICKETS

Dr. Tallulah is a fiery Shamanic Healer, Sexual Activist, Vision Quest Guide, Intuitive, Zen Cosmetologist, Motivational Speaker, Cognitive Revolutionary, Dyslexia Advocate, Om Coach, Vaginal Consciousness (VAGCON™) Pioneer and recent transplant from Ireland to the Pacific Northwest. Imagine a metaphysical cross between Archie Bunker, Dr Ruth, Carol Burnett, Shirley Valentine, Edith Bouvier Beale, and Maria Bamford on steroids with a wee bit of Viagra and you're closer to understanding who Dr Tallulah is.

VAGCON™ is a workshop/performance led by Dr Tallulah that integrates group thrusting, fake orgasmic breathing, 3rd eye rubbing, traumatic story telling (with a twist!) and consumption of powerful jungle medicine. We utilize Qi-Gong Gi-Long foam rolling movement techniques, laughter-based therapy, and reversed Gestaltian methods to emphasize the phenomenality of both client (Dr Tallulah) and therapist (Audience) to safely cultivate attunement, freedom, and reconnect with our VAGCON™. This is the work! Anyone interested in becoming more connected to the VAGCON™ is welcome—beginners, cismales, wounded healers, laymen, seasoned practitioners. No vagina is necessary to tap into the fold!

This original story taps into the zeitgeist of a New Age baby boomer generation and walks the line between satire and the performer's (Nesbitt's) own vulnerability in her quest for intimacy. It's a combination of pratfall/seriousness and uses pathos/audience participation in her descent into the exploration of her sexuality that reveals her heart's truest desire. It's poignant, raw, zany, hilarious, grotesque, absurd, and brilliant. You'll laugh, sigh, possibly cry.

PRESS: A One Sentence Project Description

While Dr Tallulah wields her cosmic workshop on Vaginal Consciousness (VAGCON™), we, her audience, lay witness to her humorous and spiraling descent into the exploration of her sexuality, which then ultimately reveals her HEART’S  truest desires.
